Child of Molten Flame: It was early morning and the day after both Cassidy and Nina had…
It was early morning and the day after both Cassidy and Nina had passed their “exams” to become full fledged reapers. The morning sun was bright as it…
Cassidy smiled back… “Don’t be so nervous Nina, every thing will be fine. Just think at least we are going out on out first collection with Eric and not Grell.Your will be fine just remember the things we learned in the academy ” Cassidy said trying to reassure he friend as they ran to meet Eric
The elder reaper looked up at the clock on the wall, only another two minutes or he was going without them. He sat in the lounge in Dispatch, his saw resting beside him as he waited for the two girls. For the past ten minutes he had been waiting, playing with the chain and tassel on his pants while hoping the two would show up early so they can this done faster.
Hearing the sound of pounding footsteps, Eric looked up to see red and blonde hair make their way through a small crowd of reapers. ‘Finally…’ he thought, standing up and casually swinging his scythe over his shoulder. “C’mon ladies! Ya still need tae check out yer scythes an’ first soul’s due in ten minutes!” he called, voice easily being heard above the chattering of other reapers on break.
“Eric , i’m sorry we are a little late. Its my fault, I slept in late.” Cassidy called to her brother as her and Nina pushed threw the crowd to get their scythes for the first time. Cassidy was the first to get the window to get her new scythe. To her surprise it was a shiny new katana. which was odd considering all of the other scythes that she had seen where garden tools.
“Don’ dwell on it. Jus’ grab yer scythes an’ let’s hit it. It’s troublesome getting tae souls late,” Eric scoffed slightly, ready just to head home and go to sleep. Or at the very least leave these two to do some collecting while he went to get a cup of coffee. The two he drank earlier didn’t seem to do a thing. Another one might do it.
He made his way past a few reapers and waited by the staircase for the two young reapers. He hoped these two knew what they were doing with their scythes. The more they knew, the less Eric would have to teach them- just help them improve until their mentorship ended.
After getting her scythe and ting it to her belt Nina pulled back her hair into a high ponytail as to keep it out of her face and away from any chance of being accidentally cut. Nina managed to do both things while getting pass new recruits and other reapers not bumping a single one.
‘Today’s going to be a good day’ She thought to herself and smiled, Grell wasn’t going to be around to potentially screw something up. It really was going to be a good day, she was reaping with her best friend and her best friends brother. But this also meant no screwing up for them either. mentor ship simply meant that screwing up now either gets you injured or killed or the very worst, sent back to the academy.
Shaking the thoughts from her head she turned her straight face into one of nothing but smiles. as she followed Eric with Cassidy to the stairs.
Cassidy followed close behind Nina with her scythe tied to her back as to not get caught on any one or any thing as they moved through the crowed. This was one of the first times that Cassidy was starting to get nervous. “Its not just my reputation on the line today its Eric’s and Nina’s as well, I can’t mess this collection up.” She thought to herself.
This would be the first time that Nina and she would be in the Human world and Cassidy was both excited and frightened at the same time. Her main worry was that she didn’t want to disappoint her brother, having his approval still meant as much to her as is did when they were both still alive. “Eric where are we going to collect our souls.” Cassidy asked from behind.
“Couple o’ places, variety o’ death tae get ya used tae different stuff,” he explained briefly, quickly making his way down the flights of stairs until they reached the main lobby on the ground floor. “Noo, before we git out thaur, ye both need tae know somethin’ really important sae listen right haur an’ noo.” Eric was hardly a series person, normally carefree and laid back but there were times when he would be extremely series, mostly when it had to do with the safety and well being of people under his care.
“The fifth rule o’ Dispatch is tha’ we work coldly withit a smile. Do either o’ ye two lassies know why that’s a rule?” he asked sternly. Eric too was a fun loving person, smiling and having a laugh at any given chance. When it came to collecting souls, he knew it had to push emotions aside. He was one of the best when it came to field work, his reputation high on how efficiently he could use his scythe. He was more than willing to teach recruits about the ways of gathering souls. He taught well and harshly, only the best made it through him. He didn’t care who it was, the treatment remained the same. However, he would be cautiousness this time. It was his sister and Grell’s sibling after all; he wouldn’t be able to get over it if either of them got seriously hurt under his watch.
Nina thought a moment placing her pointer finger to her chin and then relaxed the smile away from her lips as well as letting her dark green eyes narrow ever so slightly. A much more serious look passed over her face before she even spoke.
“We do not smile or show any emotion because showing either is showing your getting attached to your target.” She said in a tone that meant business. A tone that she used more in her academy days and on exam day above all else. She knew that the odds were against her and Cassidy when they entered to take the infield jobs instead of office jobs, so to her the serious tone meant she was really getting down to business. Something it seems her brother always took lightly, showing one difference the siblings had.
“Yer only scratchin’ th’ surface. That’s what they tell ya in the Academy an’ don’t go intae it,” he lectured, opening the door for them before heading outside himself. It was a bit of a walk to the first target, even with the use of portals to the area. They might as well get moving and he could finish the brief lesson as they went. “An’ what about’cha little sis? Think ya could go a bit deeper intae the subject?”
“Let me think…. if i remember correctly it is also so you can judge weather a soul should be collected or weather if letting the target live will benefit humanity.” She answered as she rubbed the back of her head trying to think if there was any thing that she may have missed. “Also if you get attached to the target is when making that decision can get messy.”
“Surface again,” he sighed. The people at the Academy were really cutting off knowledge for these new kids, they were going to get hurt and they wouldn’t know why until it’s too late. “Reapers can cut up Records if the case is need’d. They can view ‘em an’ can touch ‘em. Records can touch, attack, an’ even kill. Ya show any sympathy tae any soul, show weakness in collectin’ a fighting soul- yer goin’ tae be hurt an’ might even die if it goes on fer too long. Do not let a Record get inside ya, if it attacks- reap it an’ take care o’ it as soon as ye can. Don’t hesitate,” Eric explained as seriously as he could. He personally knew two reapers who had this happen and neither were going to be the best or strongest in the field. They’re careers might even cut short because of this mistake that could have avoided.
Nina only nodded listening taking every word to heart. And as Eric explained why her nervousness began to return, but she wouldn’t let it consume her, not with them being now on the job. Resting a hand on her katana Nina rested her weight on her right side. “We made it this far, we are not going to let anything make us turn back now. Or even cut our lives short for that matter.” She spoke and it sounded light hearted but in truth she meant every word with complete seriousness. They did make it this far, and they were beating the odds for all female reapers, who mainly just sat at desks all day. She didn’t want that and she knew Cassidy didn’t want to sit around an office all day either. This was their chance to prove everyone wrong that woman could work in the field.
